About the author: Julie Lynn Hayes first began publishing short stories and poetry in the 1990’s, when it was a different ballgame altogether, and Ebooks hadn’t been dreamed of yet. That changed in 2010 with the acceptance of her first romance novel. She’s come a long way since that first book appeared, and is finding the journey a very educational one. She lives in St. Louis with her daughter Sarah and her cat Ramesses. She often writes of two men finding true love and happiness in one another’s arms, and is a great believer in the happily ever after. She likes to write in different genres, to stretch herself in order to see what is possible. Her great challenge is to be told something can’t be done—she feels compelled to do it. When she isn’t writing, she enjoys crafts, such as crocheting and cross stitch, needlepoint and knitting, and she loves to cook, spending time watching the Food Network. Her favorite chef is Geoffrey Zakarian. Her family thinks she’s a bit off, but she doesn’t mind. Marching to the beat of one’s own drummer is a good thing, after all. Questions about the author!Hi Julie, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book. Good morning, Michael, and thanks so much for having me here today! I come from the Midwest, and have pretty much lived in St. Louis, Missouri, all my life. I live there now with my daughter, Sarah, and our cat, The Mighty Ramesses. I have a job I enjoy with an elevator inspection company, although I’ve had lots of other jobs before this one. I’ve been married twice, and have five children and three grandchildren. I began writing when I was about nine. During the 90’s, I began publishing in small magazines, none of which exist anymore. Short stories and poetry. It wasn’t until 2010 that my first book, To the Max, was published by Dreamspinner Press. Since that time, I’ve had a number of other books published. My current book is When Will I Be Loved, with Amber Quill Press. It’s the sequel to When Can I See You Again. The first book was about Raoul Marchand and Alexx Jameson, while this one features Miller Fenwick and Holt Wynne. Do you pay attention to literary criticism? If so, how do you handle it? I assume by literary criticism you mean bad reviews. I do try to read reviews when I get them, but I keep in mind that they are just opinions, no different than the ones I write for the books I read. Some reviews have to be taken with a grain of salt, especially the ones at Goodread. People post reviews who haven’t even read the book, taking a dislike to it simply because their friend didn’t like it, accepting at face value whatever their friend said. Some don’t like the genre (so why they read it is beyond me). And some people just like to criticize the authors, maybe because it makes them feel better about themselves. I don’t know. Some pick on things that are not the author’s responsibility – such as editing and formatting (unless you’re self-published). But then there are some really constructive criticisms, people who take the time to tell you something, and those I try to listen and learn from. The others, I don’t respond to and just let them roll off. How do you come up with your titles? I have to admit, sometimes it’s not easy, while other times, they just come to me, even if I don’t always realize it at the time lol For exampke, as I was writing When Will I See You Again, the song by that name kept running through my head, and I finally realized that was the perfect title. Naming the sequel was easier. I wondered if there was another song starting with When, and ‘When Will I Be Loved’ came to mind, by Linda Ronstadt, and it was perfect! Sometimes my friends help with titles too, when I’m at a loss. For example, Revelations was originally titled Kyrie Eleison, but author Marie Sexton suggested Revelations, and the rest was history. So I guess titles are a combination of luck, inspiration, and friendship! What new authors have grasped your interest? That’s a tough question. Since I tend to read a lot of books that are considered to be classics, by authors who’ve been around a long time, other authors, especially in the m/m genre, are all newcomers by comparison. So let’s go with that, and I apologize if the ones I name aren’t exactly new authors. The first one who comes to mind is also a friend of mine, but she’s new to me in the sense that I hadn’t read her before she became a member of my writing group: Chris T. Kat. I love her characters. They are full of life and she makes them real, makes you feel them. I am privileged to read everything before she publishes, so I know very well how good she is. Another new author is Marian Lanouette, who writes the Jake Carrington detective series. She invests her mysteries with a great depth of character, and I look forward to seeing what comes next for Jake. Also, some new authors I’ve enjoyed are Phoenix Emrys, LJ Labarthe, and Raine O’Tierney. Raine, with her Sweet Giordan Please Remember, touched me on many levels. What is the hardest part about writing? I think the hardest part about writing is finding the time, when there are so many things to do. Or least things I should do. Also, deciding which of my many projects I want to work on. I have a lot of irons in the fire at any given time, so focusing on one can be difficult. Once I get the words down on paper, then I polish them until I am satisfied. Sometimes it’s hard to know when I’ve done what I need to do without doing too much, which is just as bad as not doing enough. It’s a fine line. Name your four most important food groups.
