Part 2 of the interview with Douglas Black. See Part 1 here Your favorite gay tv show or movie? Queer As Folk, both the British and US versions, definitely broke boundaries. I think that show was hugely important in changing the way LGBT characters are portrayed on screen. It stopped them having to always be the best friend or camp comedy figure and showed them as sexual beings. Equally, the movie Milk was fantastic not only as a piece of cinema, but because it brought the history of the gay rights movement in the USA to people’s attention at a time I think so many had forgotten who their LGBT rights activist forefathers were. Do you feel that celebs who are gay or bi should come out the closet? I’m going to say ‘yes’ and then I’m going to qualify that. Yes, people in the public eye should come out. Doing so helps break down stereotypes, generate understanding, and most importantly, I think it helps in moving the conversation about LGBT equality forward. However, if doing so were to place that person in danger, be detrimental to their wellbeing, or cause damage to their relationships and career then of course they should pause. Pushing people out of the closet is dangerous. People have to do what is right for them. Favorite character in one of your books? Jake from Port In A Storm, and I’m not just saying that because he’s in my latest release. He’s always been my favourite character. Hands down. No competition.
